The 421 is the budget end of dry herb vaping done properly rather than cheaply. It kept the two things people liked about the 420, the digital display and the glass mouthpiece, and fixed what they complained about.
Six presets run from 356°F to 446°F in ten degree Celsius steps, which is enough resolution to actually find your temperature instead of picking the least bad of three. Airflow is adjustable, and the glass mouthpiece stays cool where a plastic one would not.
The chamber is ceramic, holds around 0.3 g, and heats by conduction, so it takes about 60 seconds to get there. That is slower than a convection unit, and it is the main trade-off at this price.

What is the difference between the Utillian 420 and the 421?
The 421 keeps the digital display and glass mouthpiece from the 420 and improves three things: six preset temperatures instead of the 420's smaller set, a larger battery, and adjustable airflow, which the 420 did not have. The chamber and the conduction heating are broadly the same. If you own a working 420, the airflow control is the upgrade you would actually feel.
How do you use it?
Grind your herb finely and pack the ceramic chamber to about 0.3 g, firm but not compressed. Press the power button, cycle to the temperature you want on the display, and wait around 60 seconds. Draw slowly and steadily rather than hard, since pulling too fast on a conduction vaporizer just moves cool air past the herb. The session ends on its own after seven minutes.
Why does it take 60 seconds to heat up?
Because it heats by conduction, meaning the chamber walls warm the herb directly rather than blowing hot air through it. Conduction is what keeps the price down, and the trade-off is a slower start and the need to stir the chamber partway through a session for even extraction. Convection units like the 621 and 723 start in half the time.
How do you clean the Utillian 421?
Empty the chamber while it is still warm and brush it out. Every week or so, soak the glass mouthpiece and the screens in isopropyl alcohol, rinse them in warm water and dry completely before refitting. A clogged screen is the usual reason a 421 starts drawing tight, and it is a two-minute fix rather than a fault.
Can I replace the glass mouthpiece?
Yes, it is a stocked replacement part, which is worth knowing since glass is the piece most likely to break if the device is dropped. It comes fitted with a heat shield, and it is the reason the draw stays cool on the higher presets. Do not run the device without it.
