Disposable Vapes

A disposable vape is a sealed device that comes pre-filled with e-liquid and pre-charged, ready to use out of the package. Most have no buttons: you draw on the mouthpiece and a sensor heats a coil that turns the e-liquid into vapour. When the e-liquid runs out you recycle the device. Most models now recharge over USB-C, so the battery lasts as long as the liquid does.

It depends on the puff rating and how you vape. Devices here run from about 600 puffs up to 20,000 or more, and those numbers are lab estimates, so real use varies with how long and hard you draw. As a rough guide a lighter vaper might get a couple of weeks from a 5,000, while a daily vaper goes through it faster. Bigger tanks cost less per puff.

Rechargeable models have a USB-C port, usually on the bottom. Plug in any standard USB-C cable, the same kind most phones use, and a phone charger or laptop port is fine, so there is no special charger to buy. Most take under an hour to fully charge and show a light when done. Charge it once the vapour gets weak rather than waiting for it to die.

A burnt taste means the coil is not getting enough e-liquid. It happens most often when the device is nearly empty, or when you take several long draws back to back without letting the coil re-wet. Resting it for a minute between draws helps while there is liquid left. Once the burnt taste stays, the device is used up and should be replaced.

If it stops early on a rechargeable model, the battery is usually flat, so try charging it over USB-C. If it is charged but gives no vapour, take shorter, gentler draws, since pulling too hard can flood the coil. A device that seems to drain quickly is often being chain-vaped or is a smaller-capacity model than it feels, so a higher puff rating lasts longer between charges.

They do have a shelf life. Over many months the e-liquid can darken and the flavour fades, and the battery slowly loses charge, so a very old device may taste flat even unopened. Most have a batch or date code on the packaging. Buying what you will use within a few months and storing it somewhere cool and out of sunlight keeps it tasting its best.

A used disposable has a small lithium battery inside, so it should not go in the household garbage or the blue bin. Most vape shops and many municipal recycling depots around Metro Vancouver accept them for battery recycling. Bring your empties to us or to a local depot to be handled safely.

In Canada, vapes and their batteries must travel in your carry-on or on your person, never in checked baggage, which is an airline rule for lithium batteries, and you cannot vape on the plane. For international trips, check the destination's rules first, since some countries restrict or ban vapes entirely.
