A bong (or water pipe) pulls smoke through water, which cools it and filters out some of the harshness before you inhale. They range from tall glass tubes to compact rigs built for concentrates. The right one comes down to what you are smoking and how much filtration and portability you want.
Bong or dab rig
A bong is for dry herb, with a bowl you pack and light. A dab rig is for concentrates, with a banger or nail you heat. The shapes look similar, but rigs are usually smaller with tighter percolation for the thicker vapour concentrates make. Pick the one that matches what you use.
Glass, silicone, or acrylic
Glass is the standard: easy to clean, neutral on flavour, and in thick borosilicate it takes knocks. Silicone is near-indestructible and good for travel, though a little less pure on flavour. Acrylic is cheapest but scratches and holds odour. For a daily piece, glass is worth it.
Percolators and filtration
A percolator is extra glass inside the bong that breaks the smoke into smaller bubbles, cooling and smoothing it further. More percs mean a softer hit but more to clean. A simple downstem does the basic job; tree, honeycomb, or showerhead percs add filtration if you want an easier pull.
Size and joint
Taller bongs cool the smoke more and hit smoother; smaller ones are easier to store and travel with. Check the joint size (usually 14 mm or 18 mm) when buying a bowl or downstem so the parts fit. Grab a spare bowl and a screen while you are at it.
Keeping it clean
Rinse after sessions and do a deeper clean with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt when the water turns cloudy. Clean glass tastes better and lasts longer. We stock the bowls, downstems, and cleaners too, and we can get any of it to you the same day across Vancouver, often in 45 to 60 minutes, with shipping Canada-wide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you clean a bong?
Empty the water, then add isopropyl alcohol (90 percent works best) and a few spoons of coarse salt. Cover the openings, shake so the salt scrubs the inside, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and let it dry. Do this whenever the water looks cloudy or the smoke tastes harsh. Soak bowls and downstems in the same mix.
How do you use a bong?
Fill the base with enough water to cover the downstem, pack ground herb loosely into the bowl, and light it while drawing slowly through the mouthpiece. Once the chamber fills with smoke, lift the bowl out (or clear the carb) and inhale the rest. Start with small pulls until you know how it hits.
What is a percolator?
A percolator is extra glass inside a bong that breaks the smoke into many small bubbles as it passes through water. More bubbles mean more contact with the water, which cools and smooths the smoke before you inhale. Tree, honeycomb, and showerhead are common types; more percolation is smoother but takes more cleaning.
What is the difference between a bong and a bubbler?
A bong is a larger standing water pipe with a removable bowl and usually more filtration, made for bigger, smoother hits at home. A bubbler is a smaller handheld pipe with water filtration built in, easier to carry but with a fixed bowl and less cooling. A bong smooths more; a bubbler travels better.
